TRI CAUCUS HOLDS BRIEFING ON STATUS OF FOUNDATION COALITION AGREEMENT

Los Angeles, CA –Representatives from major California foundations will discuss progress made in awarding grants to minority non-profit organizations, since reaching a 2007 agreement with the Legislative Tri-Caucuses, in an informational briefing at USC on Friday, July 13, 2012.

Senator Price, chair of the Black Caucus, who was involved in the initial conversations in 2007 to expand charitable giving, convened the briefing to bring together stakeholders and shed light on what has changed since 2007.

Additionally, the Greenlining Institute will release at the briefing, a 28-page study and progress report, “A Promise to Diverse Communities,” a summary of the Foundation Coalition’s efforts.

The briefing will address the lack of diversity in philanthropy, an issue highlighted by the Greenlining Institute in 2007, that resulted in the introduction of legislation that would have required private and community based foundations, with assets at or surpassing $250 million, headquartered in California, to disclose gender, racial, and ethnic diversity data on an annual basis.

This legislation would have required almost four dozen foundations in California to report their diversity data on their website and in their annual reports.  Many foundations organized to oppose this legislation.  And it was pulled from California Senate consideration in June 2008 after an agreement was reached between a coalition of 10 California-based foundations and the leaders of the Black, Asian, and Latino Caucuses.

“It is time to revisit this issue and see how these major funders are living up to their agreement for transparency and inclusion in awarding grants to non-profits,” said Senator Curren D. Price, Jr. Chair of the Black Caucus.
