California Legislative Black Caucus Condemns Dave Regan’s Reign of Terror at SEIU

SACRAMENTO, CA—The California Legislative Black Caucus released the following statement on reports of SEIU-UHW President Dave Regan’s history of harassment:

Intimidation, threats, aggression, violence, extortion. These are not the qualities of trustworthy leaders, but tools of tyrants and oppressors.

At least two investigations substantiate claims that for years, SEIU-UHW President Dave Regan used force and intimidation wantonly at women within the labor organization's ranks. This behavior is simply beyond the pale.

Leadership of any organization carries a basic obligation at its forefront: to protect, not endanger, the people who work for and with that organization. Regan’s alleged pattern of bullying, threats, and physical intimidation directed disproportionately at women—including women of color—is a betrayal of that obligation.

The CLBC stands with all of the victims of Dave Regan’s vicious crusade for power and are in deep gratitude for the individuals who were able to report their experiences. Too often are these voices silenced by the weight of their experiences and fear of fallout from coming forward.

Given the twice-over substantiation of well-documented grievances, the California Legislative Black Caucus calls for Dave Regan to resign his position and issue a public apology to the victims of his ire. The CLBC further calls on SEIU to move expeditiously through its disciplinary process, including immediate suspension pending outcomes of the process.

The safety of the union’s staff and members must always outweigh the political ambitions of one person.
