California Legislative Black Caucus Releases Statement on Trump’s Tax-and-Spending Plan and Harmful Impacts to Black Communities

Press Release

SACRAMENTO, CA—The California Legislative Black Caucus released the following statement in response to the enactment of President Trump’s so-called “Big Beautiful Bill”:

The California Legislative Black Caucus stands in strong opposition to President Donald J. Trump’s so-called “one big beautiful” tax-and-spending package. Behind the rhetoric and shiny promises lies a dangerous agenda that further rigs the economy in favor of the wealthy while slashing the very lifelines that Black families and working-class communities depend on to survive.

Trump’s plan cements the 2017 tax cuts that overwhelmingly benefit corporations and the top 1%, while adding flashy new provisions like a Social Security “bonus” for seniors and deductions for auto loans, tip income, and overtime pay. But beneath the surface, this bill is devastating for low-income communities—particularly Black Americans—who will pay the price for these tax breaks through deep cuts to essential programs like Medicaid, food assistance, student loan protections, and clean energy tax credits.

Trump’s actions are a devastating blow to the poorest Americans—those who rely on Medicaid and SNAP to put food on the table, access healthcare, and maintain a basic standard of living. In California, where Black communities already face health disparities, housing insecurity, and the burdens of student loan debt, this bill pushes our families further to the margins.

This plan is not “beautiful.” It is cruel, short-sighted, and morally bankrupt. It prioritizes millionaires over mothers, corporations over communities, and tax shelters over social safety nets.
