Senator Price’s Statement on Speaker Perez’ Appointment Of Assemblymember Amina Carter to Leadership Team

Sacramento, CA – After meeting with Assembly Speaker John A. Perez on Monday, Senator Curren D. Price, Jr., Chair of the California Legislative Black Caucus, issued this statement:

“The California Legislative Black Caucus remains vigilant and committed to advocating for the interests of African Americans throughout California and increasing their participation and representation in all levels of governments, particularly the California Legislature.

“We are particularly sensitive to the inclusion of its members in all aspects of political and legislative activities inside and outside of the Capitol.

“I have met with the Speaker to ensure that the skills and expertise of CLBC members are being utilized to the fullest. And we will have ongoing conversations expressing our concern that there is adequate diversity at every level of operation in the Legislature.

“While committee chairmanships are important leadership positions, it is also equally important that we are represented on the Democratic Caucus leadership team.

“Speaker Perez, who has enjoyed a long and positive relationship with the African American community, has appointed Assembly member Wilmer Amina Carter to serve as Assistant Majority Policy Leader for the 2011-2012 session of the California State Assembly.

“Assemblymember Carter’s appointment to this important post will make the Legislature stronger as a whole by ensuring that every community has a voice in the Legislature. She will be a strong and effective leader in this new role, and will be a critical part of our efforts to create new jobs in California.”

“Additionally, African Americans chair four of the most powerful committees in the Assembly.
Assemblymember Isadore Hall: Governmental Organization
Assemblymember Steven Bradford: Utilities and Commerce
Assemblymember Sandre Swanson: Labor and Employment
Assemblymember Holly Mitchell is the chair of the Budget Subcommittee on Health and Human Services, which has oversight over budget expenditures for a range of healthcare services such as CalWORKS, In-Home Supportive Services, Medi-Cal, healthy Families and Foster Care.”
